Speaking is rated on six ICAO criteria β Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension and Interactions β each 1β6. Your final level is your LOWEST single criterion, so balance all six. Level 4 must be re-tested periodically.

Standard Phraseology & Read-back
Producing correct ICAO phraseology and accurate read-backs in simulated pilot/ATC exchanges.

Situational Description
Describing situations, abnormal events and reporting problems clearly under time pressure.
Strategies:
- β’Structure your report: what happened, current status, your intention/request.
- β’Keep sentences short and unambiguous β avoid idioms.
Interactive Problem-Solving
Managing unexpected scenarios in dialogue, asking for clarification and negotiating a solution.
Strategies:
- β’Take the initiative β ask questions to resolve ambiguity.
- β’Paraphrase to confirm mutual understanding.
Golden Tips
- βDon't chase a native accent β intelligibility matters more than sounding native.
- βBuild fluency with daily speaking; hesitation lowers the Fluency rating.
- βWork on Interactions β initiate, respond and clarify, don't just answer.
- βUse precise vocabulary; vague words lower the Vocabulary score.
Common Mistakes
- βLetting one weak criterion (often Fluency or Interactions) drag the level down.
- βPursuing a "native" accent instead of clear, intelligible speech.
- βGiving minimal answers and failing to initiate or clarify.
- βUsing idioms/slang that are ambiguous on international radio.
