Speaking is rated on six ICAO criteria — Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension and Interactions — each 1–6. Your final level is your LOWEST single criterion, so balance all six. Level 4 must be re-tested periodically.

Standard Phraseology & Read-back
Producing correct ICAO phraseology and accurate read-backs in simulated pilot/ATC exchanges.
Strategies:
- •Read back clearances exactly and in the correct order.
- •Use standard corrections ("Correction", "Disregard") naturally.
Situational Description
Describing situations, abnormal events and reporting problems clearly under time pressure.
Strategies:
- •Structure your report: what happened, current status, your intention/request.
- •Keep sentences short and unambiguous — avoid idioms.
Interactive Problem-Solving
Managing unexpected scenarios in dialogue, asking for clarification and negotiating a solution.
Strategies:
- •Take the initiative — ask questions to resolve ambiguity.
- •Paraphrase to confirm mutual understanding.
Golden Tips
- ✓Don't chase a native accent — intelligibility matters more than sounding native.
- ✓Build fluency with daily speaking; hesitation lowers the Fluency rating.
- ✓Work on Interactions — initiate, respond and clarify, don't just answer.
- ✓Use precise vocabulary; vague words lower the Vocabulary score.
Common Mistakes
- ✗Letting one weak criterion (often Fluency or Interactions) drag the level down.
- ✗Pursuing a "native" accent instead of clear, intelligible speech.
- ✗Giving minimal answers and failing to initiate or clarify.
- ✗Using idioms/slang that are ambiguous on international radio.
